Outlet Description:

At lunch hour on weekdays, watch the CBD crowds queueing at Tan Hock Seng – no, not for savoury sustenance, but for pong piah, little mounds of freshly baked, crisply aromatic pastry filled with sweet sticky maltose, and beh teh saw, similar treats with a softer pastry skin. Come weekends, the scene is less harried, office crowds replaced with cars pulling up momentarily so regulars can scoot out to grab precious packets of the above piah, sweetmeats, biscuits and other heritage Hokkien pastries. Already well into its 7th decade of business, Tan Hock Seng looks set to remain close to the hearts of many Singaporeans.
